As a general rule, we don't recommend buying pointsspeculatively. They often aren't a great deal, and if you don't have plans to use them, they could lose value before you redeem them. But there are exceptions to this rule, including 1) when you're just shy of the points you need for a high-value redemption, 2) when you need to keep your points from expiring and 3) when there's a really, really great sale on points.
These sales usually take the form of bonuses where you get a certain percentage of extra points when you buy. For example, if you buy 50,000 points and there's a 150% bonus, you'll actually get 125,000 as you'll get the 50,000 you purchased, plus 75,000 more (that's 150% of 50,000). There's generally a minimum purchase requirement, and sometimes the bonuses increase the more you buy.
